This book is a collection of the reading sections of the exam papers prepared in the Department of Basic English in the last ten years. It is intended to provide students with supplementary material for EFL reading practice and exam preparation as it is believed that the reading material in the main textbooks is not always sufficient for this purpose. In their English-medium academic mainstream, reading will be of utmost importance for our students; therefore, we believe that they should be encouraged to read as much as possible outside class and we hope that this book will equip both the students and the teachers with enough means to emphasize reading comprehension and vocabulary funduszeue.info material in this book has been graded according to text difficulty and the level of the exercises so that it will serve the needs of our students - from the beginner level to intermediate - in the first semester. There are passages in the book, which will enable each student to read extensively at his own level and to move on to the more advanced texts for challenge. In selecting the passages, an attempt has been made to include a variety of topics and text types so as to promote reading for pleasure as well. Finally, the material has been edited to maintain a reasonable level of consistency in the exercise types throughout the book. Although it is prepared with the students of the Department of Basic English in mind, we believe that this book will help any enthusiastic student of English as a foreign language. Öz Türkçe dil bilgisi öğretiminin sorunlu ve dolayısıyla tartışmalı konularından biri de sözcük teriminin kavramsal değeri ve sözcük türlerinin tasnifi meselesidir. Özellikle sözcük'ün tam bir tanımının yapılamaması, hem sözlük birimlerin hem de sözcük biçimlerin dil bilgisi kitaplarında sözcük türü olarak tasnif edilip adlandırılması ve birden fazla sözcükten oluşan söz dizimsel unsurların sözcük türü sınıfına dâhil edilmesi, ciddi bir öğretim sorunu olarak kendini gösterir. Bu çalışmada literatür taraması yoluyla elde edilen veriler ışığında söz, sözcük ve sözcük türü terimleri, kavramsal değerleri açısından ele alınmış, sözcük türlerinin işlenişine yönelik tasnifler değerlendirilmiştir. Ulaşılan verilerden, küçültmeli yapısından dolayı özelde sözcük'ün, genelde ise hem sözcük hem de kelime'nin Türkçenin kelime kadrosunu kapsayacak kabiliyette olmadığı, dolayısıyla sözcük/kelime temelli sözcük türü tanım ve tasniflerinin uygulanabilirlik açısından büyük ölçüde sorunlu olduğu/olacağı sonucuna varılmış, sözcük/kelime yerine, söz temelli bir tasnif ve terimlendirmenin daha isabetli olacağı belirtilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonunda bu görüşümüzü somutlamak üzere söz temelli küçük bir terimlendirme denemesi yapılmıştır. Anahtar Kelimeler: Söz, Sözcük, Sözcük Türü. Abstract One of the problematic and therefore controversial topics of teaching Turkish grammar is the issue of conceptual value of the term "sözcük (word)" and the classification of "sözcük türleri (word class)". In particular, inability of making complete definition of the term "sözcük (word)", naming and classification of both lexical morphemes and word forms in grammar books as a "sözcük türü (word class)", and the inclusion of syntactic components consisting of more than one sözcük (word) into the category of "sözcük türü (word class)" stand out as a serious teaching problem. In this study, in the light of the data obtained through literature review, terms of "söz (word/speech)", "sözcük (word)" and "sözcük türü (word class)" were adressed in terms of their conceptual values, and the classifications for the usage of "sözcük türü (word class)" were evaluated. According to the data obtained, it is concluded that, because of diminutive structure Turkish language, the term "sözcük (word)" in particular, both the term "sözcük (word)" and the term "kelime (word)" in general are not capable of covering word framework of the Turkish language, and accordingly the "sözcük/kelime"-based word class definitions and classifications, to a great extent, has been and will probably be problematic in terms of applicability. It is stated that a "söz"-based classification and nomenclature will be more accurate instead of "sözcük/kelime"-based one. At the end of the study, a brief "söz"-based trial was made in order to embody our view. Keywords: Söz (Word/Speech), Sözcük (Word), Sözcük Türü (Word Class).
