I hear aerialists say all the time not to connect an aluminum carabiner to a steel carabiner, or vice versa, but no-one can explain why that is.  Can you shed light on the subject?

This is a hot button topic, so I&#;m not going to try to cover the whole thing from top to bottom.  This seems to be prominent amongst &#;Circus&#; folk, and comes from a very small thing made into a big thing.

So here is some info:

The &#;reason&#; not to use Aluminum touching Steel in various applications is that there is a chemical reaction between the two that will cause the chemically weaker Aluminum to degrade faster than the Steel.

That being said:

&#;I have not been able to find any documentation from the Manufacturers (Petzel, Black Diamond, Rock Exotica&#;etc) that states any sort of warning indicating any risk in using Steel and Aluminum in conjunction.  These companies have to make equipment to ANSI standards, and are overwhelmingly documented on every aspect of their equipment.  If it was a credible concern, wouldn&#;t there be a red flag on the equipment that states so?  Feel free to contact any manufacturer, they are required to provide you specs on their equipment and any hazards related to their use.

As long as you are using it within its limits, any piece of equipment (steel or aluminum) should be expected to work as intended.

As a side note:

-Your Swivels that you hang from&#; those are Steel shafts and ball-bearings in an Aluminum Casing.

-Your Aluminum Auto Lock carabiners&#; the springs that cause them to lock are made of Steel.

&#; your Rescue Pulleys you hang from, those are Aluminum bodies with a Steel shaft the Pulley rolls on.

Take a look at your own equipment, I bet you can find more.

As for just using steel equipment:

Steel is stronger, but more expensive.  Aluminum equipment is more prevalent and widely used successfully in millions of applications each year.  It&#;s lighter, doesn&#;t rust, and made to be strong.   You may encounter a facility or employer that requires you to use nothing but steel.  That being the case, you have to do what they say.  I believe that the Aerial Rigging inspector I spoke with in New York required that our theatre show use Steel Auto locking carabiners, but upon looking at the written standards, it was not indicated as such the document provided.

I use aluminum biners on steel eyelets quite often in my performances and here is what happens. The harder steel will dent the aluminum on the first hang and over many performances the friction between the harder steel and the softer aluminum will cause the dent to worsen and cause metal burs on the edges of that wear point. after many performances and practices I still haven&#;t needed to take them out of service but I am more mindful of which biners I run ropes through and which biners I use for steel contact. ~Trevor Gash, Edmonton, Alberta

It was cool seeing the child become part of the performance with Johnnyswim. Get ‘em started early they say. What a way to grow… a star is born. It was difficult to tear my camera off the beautiful Amanda Sudano and child as a compositional element and refocus on the music…but I managed, and got a few keepers of Abner Ramirez’s awesome performance.
It began as a rain-soaked evening, but ended a beautiful shoot. I was all geared up to photograph Billy Rafoul, Johnnyswim and NEEDTOBREATHE, but unfortunately we couldn’t get access to shoot Billy Raffoul’s performance, so I’m sorry to those of you that may be looking for this here, but I am happy that things worked out so well with Johnnyswim & NEEDTOBREATHE.

NEEDTOBREATHE attracts a swell crowd. A wholesome vibe penetrated Walnut Creek. We were all  feeling pretty good that evening although there were some very light showers in the beginning. We were lucky with the weather clearing, enjoying the show a lot better after we took our hot ponchos off. The band gave it their all and the crowd was very appreciative. A brilliant give and take.

Kdysi jsem tento článek napsal pro dnes již neexistující server eunic-brussels.eu a dnes jsem na něj narazil v jedné složce. Ač lidé na počítačích pracují, o jejich vzniku vědí málo&#; proto čtěte, třeba se dozvíte něco nového.

Prvním známým a historicky doloženým předchůdcem dnešních počítačů byl nejspíše abakus, počítací stroj sestrojený v Malé Asii před více než pěti tisíci lety. Bylo možné ho použít ke sčítání a odčítání menších cifer a v některých zemích se používá dodnes. Byla to primitivní pomůcka založená na posouvání korálků po provázku nebo tyčce. Těmto korálkům se v Římě říkalo „calculli“ – odtud název kalkulačka. První mechanickou kalkulačku v historii údajně vynalezl Leonardo da Vinci a podle jeho náčrtků byla dokonce i sestrojena i v naší současnosti. Jeho horlivým následovníkem byl Francouz Blaise Pascal, který v roce vyrobil počítací stroj, který uměl pouze sčítat a odčítat a fungoval na principu přetáčení ozubených koleček. V historii vývoje počítačů si své místo také plně zasloužil anglický badatel Charles Babbage, který asi v polovině století sestrojil mechanický sčítač děrných štítků a později usiloval o vytvoření univerzálnějšího počítače, který by byl schopen řešit i složitější početní úkony. V roce dokonce předvedl plány na stroj pro řešení diferenciálních rovnic, který ovšem nebyl sestaven. Jednalo se totiž o „obludu“, která měla velikost lokomotivy a byla poháněna párou. Další výzkumy však byly ukončeny jeho smrtí a proto svoje sny nikdy plně nerealizoval.

Další vývoj počítačů se již dělí do jednotlivých generací.

První generace počítačů byla velmi primitivní. Počítače neměli žádný společný ani sjednocený software a všechny jejich části i funkce byly sestrojovány přesně na míru. V této době zatím ještě neexistují žádné společné programovací jazyky a každý počítač má svůj vlastní strojový kód, který určoval funkci programu. Většina programovaných funkcí byla uchována na přenosných médiích (děrné štítky a papírové pásky). Programování bylo nesmírně složité a zdlouhavé. Počítače to byly pomalé a mohla je používat pouze jedna osoba. Programování probíhalo právě prostřednictvím děrných štítků. Ty se vkládaly do vstupu stroje a program v konečné podobě vycházel z výstupu počítače. Rychlost vstupu byla několik set znaků za sekundu, zatímco u výstupu to bylo pouze do třiceti znaků za sekundu. Takové počítače byly obrovské, mohly dokonce zabrat celou budovu a to díky jejich hlavním součástkám – elektronkám – a zároveň byly díky nim velice poruchové. Tato generace počítačů se uplatnila ve druhé světové válce. Byly to hlavně šifrovací stroje, počítače pro výpočet balistické křivky střel a pro výpočty trajektorií raket. První samočinný počítač v USA byl Howard Mark 1, který sestrojil Howard Aike se svými spolupracovníky z univerzity. Měřil 16 metrů, vážil přibližně 5 tun, obsahoval přes tři čtvrtě milionu součástek a kilometrů drátových spojů. Byl to elektronický reléový počítač, který využíval elektronické impulsy k pohybu mechanických součástek. Američané ho však nejspíše použili pro výpočty při vývoji první atomové bomby.

Druhá generace počítačů nastupuje vynálezem tranzistoru. Tranzistor byl zkonstruován v roce a nejprve byl využíván například v rádiích v oblasti počítačů se uplatňuje teprve v roce , kde nahrazuje elektronky. Díky tranzistorům se počítače značně zmenšily, spotřebovávaly daleko méně elektrické energie a také se hodně snížila jejich poruchovost. Na druhé straně se tranzistory hodně zahřívaly a spalovaly počítač zevnitř. V tomto období již nastupují první programovací jazyky, které počítače částečně sjednotily a rozšířila se možnost jejich využití. Prvním jazykem se nejspíše stal Short code, který vytvořil John Mauchly v roce Dalším jazykem pro vědecké výpočty byl Fortan (). Pro teoretické výpočty spíše matematického rázu byl v roce definován jazyk Algol. V roce byl napsán jazyk pro hromadné zpracování dat, například pro ekonomické výpočty, který se jmenuje Cobol. A samozřejmě nemůžeme opomenout programovací jazyk Basic (), který se stal základem pro programování na mikropočítačích. Velkými změnami také prošla paměť. Začaly se používat magnetické pásky, ale jejich nevýhodou byla dlouhá přístupová doba, a proto se časem přešlo na diskovou paměť. Disky měly daleko větší kapacitu a byly mnohem rychlejší.

Třetí generace počítačů byla založena na zdokonalování integrovaných obvodů. Vědec Jack Clair Kilby přišel v roce s nápadem vytvoření jedné součástky z kousku polovodiče (křemíku), která by obsáhla větší počet součástek. Tak vznikl integrovaný obvod, který zajistil výrazné zmenšení počítačů a zvýšeni jejich spolehlivosti. Šlo hlavně o to, že se počítače tak nepřehřívaly a byly mnohem rychlejší. První čip sestrojil právě Kilby, byla to germaniová destička asi 1 cm dlouhá a tenčí než párátko (obsahoval tranzistor, odpory a kondenzátory). V roce vyslovil Gordon Moor domněnku (Moorův zákon), že kapacita integrovaných obvodů se bude každých měsíců zvyšovat a toto tvrzení platí do dneška. Roku byla vyvinuta tzv. magnetická bublinková paměť – jedná se o granátovou vrstvu (asi 1 mm) nanášenou na integrované obvody. Pomocí magnetizace povrchu se místo označilo jako 1 a absencí magnetizace jako 0. Tímto způsobem se informace zapisovaly do paměti. V roce Norman Kitz sestavil první elektronický osobní počítač obsahující integrované obvody a nazval jej Anita Mark 8. V tomto období vznikaly první operační systémy a došlo ke sjednocení instrukčního kódu, což umožňovalo vzájemnou kompatibilitu počítačů od jednotlivých výrobců.

Čtvrtá generace počítačů již obsahuje první mikroprocesory. V roce firma Texas Instruments začíná poprvé vyrábět mikroprocesory (CPU). Mikroprocesor zpracovává veškeré informace, které do něho vysílají ostatní části počítače a předává je dál. První inkoustovou tiskárnu vyrábí firma IBM v roce a o rok později zakládá Bill Gates a Paul Allen firmu Microsoft. Prvním operační systémem byl MS-DOS a díky němu udělaly počítače velký skok kupředu, protože se již nemusely složitě programovat a daly se obsluhovat pomocí jednoduchých příkazů (první počítač s MS-DOS uvádí IBM v roce ). V roce se na místo magnetického pásku začíná používat disketa. První osobní laserovou tiskárnu, která měla větší kvalitu tisku než inkoustová, vyrábí firma Hewlett-Packard v roce Roku vyvinula firma Microsoft pro IBM operační systém Windows , což byla zdokonalená verze MS-DOS. Tato éra počítačů přetrvává do dneška a neustále se zdokonaluje. Jsou to počítače tak jak je známe, pouze se zdokonalil jejich výkon a software.

Dokonce se již mluví i o páté generaci, která je ještě ve vývoji, ale můžeme ji očekávat v blízké budoucnosti. Vyvíjí se totiž počítače optické, které využívají toku fotonů a ne elektronů. I programátoři pracují na zlepšeních a vytvářejí virtuální realitu. A všichni dohromady se snaží o vytvoření umělé inteligence.
