'Spikey Ball'
Mike,
Do you have a link to the spike ball plans you used? I'd like to make a larger one and want to gauge how much material this will suck from my supply.
Thanks!

Awesome dude, thanks!
Yes, full size... got to... Elie was brutal on Chris's... gotta have one that punches back!...

I have a few things to do before the end of the month before starting on the spike ball...
What I hope to do before the end of the month:
Some 100' tails
Some tubes
A Drouge
Absolutely another Catherine's Wheel (48 cell this time)
Other projects coming up...
A Bol (this frightens me... 4 meters diameter).....
I was also thinking about a really BIG Circoflex... (I like building these... they are easy)
A large pan flute
One of those incredibly cool triangular kites
An interesting 3 line 1/2 circoflex thing I found
a SPIKE Ball for Elie's Show and Tell...lol
I'm loosin it...

Re: 'Spikey Ball'
I used a soccer ball as my plan!
Basically, just you need to make hexagons and pentagons. The sides of pentagons have to be the same length as the side of the hexagons.
Multiply the length of the sides x 4.8 to get the approx radius of the finished ball.
For example: 20" x 4.8 = 96" or 8 feet.

I'd love to get my hands on the pattern used for the new soccer balls introduced this year at the world cup... 14 pieces instead of the normal 60...

"Manly men" or "Men in tights"?

It's a great satisfaction knowing that for a brief point in time you made a difference.

You could also make it like a baseball, in only two pieces.
Or like a beach ball in 6 or 12 pieces (depending on the seams you choose)

Would that be concidered a miniture kite ball?
Re: 'Spikey Ball'
back to my plans of making a spike ball... Elie is bugging the crap out of me for one...
I still have some material left from my sailmaker friends but I'm thinking it may be too heavy to make a good spIKE ball...
Steve has some .65 on sale ... too light? Or just right...
Mike, what did you make Mimi out of?

Re: 'Spikey Ball'
Mimi is made out 1.5 oz material.
It seems to hold up well to all the bashing she gets, though she was looking pretty dirty after her last outing and needs a bath.
I think I would use the free stuff you already have if I was you. And if there's enough, make it really big!
There was a photo of a really big one somewhere over at the Grinnell festival page. It looked pretty cool.

Re: 'Spikey Ball'
That 20 footer, that's the kind of thing I was talking about! That's great.
Remember Babbman, it doesn't have to be a soccer ball. A different pattern might fit your scraps better.

Re: 'Spikey Ball'
A "full size" Fugu, the original spikey ball, is 23 feet in diameter, is that the size you are intending to make? Also, there is a 2X Fugu out there, do maybe one in the 40 -50 foot diameter would be good. I have thought about one of these off and on, but don't want to have to spend the effort to police it at festivals. Sometimes the kids are good and play nice, and sometimes they are totally out of control. I don't have the patience for the latter.

Re: 'Spikey Ball'
I'm going to make it as big as I possible can... I have quite a bit of yellow/blue and red 1.5oz that I'd like to use up...
ok Killip's... I LOVE your stuff and almost hate going to your site as I always come away wanting to quit my day job and just build gigantic kites...
After flying the borrowed Jordan 100 for the last couple of weeks, there is no way I cannot be without one.... They are such attention getters...

Re: 'Spikey Ball'
well, I finally got off my unbuilding butt and started a new project today.
My choice was to build Dave's Circoflex or Elie's Spikey Ball. Since I only talk to Dave about once a day and have to endure Elie's questioning about her own spikey ball for 4 hrs straight every night and all day Sat & Sun, the choice was pretty easy...
So, I started a 6' spikey ball. He will be yellow and blue because that's the colors I had in 1.5oz ripstop and more yellow than blue because I had a huge bolt of yellow that I shockingly used up almost completely for this. 6' was as big as I could go due to my current stock of material. I think 6' will keep Elie and Maddy busy for a while... as well as any other kids who will inevitably beat the crap out of it this year...
As for a name, if Elie has her way, it will be Shadrick or Oliver Obliver Butt or some other name from all of the Dr. Seuss books I read her... except SAM-I-AM because she doesn't LIKE SAM-I-AM... If it's up to me, it will BE SAM-I-AM or Cled... I kind of like Cled....lol
Anyway, I cut all the pieces today and mocked Cled up in mini form sans spikes... His eyes will be a little more creative than shown and the spikes will be WHITE per Elie's demand...
