Catherine's Wheel
Catherine's Wheel
Well, I started on a Catherine's Wheel today... Parts all cut and ready to assemble.
I think I am going to stick with a common color theme for now... red/white/blue and yellow/green/whateveritscalled...
I'm going to build 3 of this color combination to start with... a 12/24/48 cell... this one is the 24 cell..
I just hope I orient the part correctly.

If anyone has any advice or insight, I'd appreciate hearing it!

I thought about it until I saw how many pieces are involved

It's a great satisfaction knowing that for a brief point in time you made a difference.

Holythat's alotta kite there mister.
The picture is rather deceiving... the 24 cell really isn't that big and because there are no hems involved, the sewing is really rather straight forward... the 48 cell (next weeks project) will be more but in all honesty, there seems to be a lot more sewing involved in my Circoflex's than this... but, we shall see... I'll have this thing sewn up tonight, I hope...

These are the first two kites I made.
The della porta was the first sewing project for me and Rose.
One catherine wheel turns clockwise, the other counter-clockwise.

Re: Catherine's Wheel
Mike... are your CW's a 48 and 24 cell?
Did you run into anything while building them that I need to be aware of? Did you use Gary's plans?

So that's who's those are Mike. Were you flying those in DeKalb? Someone was and they drew alot of interest!

Babbman: I used Gary's plans and I don't remember much about making them anymore. If you run into trouble I can look at mine. I may also have taken notes.
Draftnik: I may have flown them early in the day, but I don't think so. If it happened more than a couple weeks ago it tends to fade from my memory.

Yes, the bridling scares the

Mike, the last time I remember seeing your CW was at Naperville

Re: Catherine's Wheel
Will have to let us know how easy/hard the wheels are Babbman. I have often thought about picking one up. I heard them revered to as F-stops, but did not have a big enough slk to hull it up in the sky.
But now that I am sewing, I can and will!!
Also as far as you saying you are going to stay with those color combos. Nothing wrong with that it looks nice when somebody has a bunch of things in the sky with the same color combos, besides you can tell when the stuff is made by the same person.

Actually F-Stops are more like a bol.

Re: Catherine's Wheel
Mike,
For your tabs, how did you sew them on? Gary really doesn't talk about this part.
Did you just use a few stitches across the tag? Did you sew a box within the tab where it attaches to the sail?
Thanks

Re: Catherine's Wheel
Remember, when I made mine, I was just as experienced as you are now.
I just looked at mine and it looks like I did a little bit of zig-zag up and down the tab. It doesn't pull very hard at all, so I think almost any method work. Personally, I wouldn't take the time to do a box on each tab.

Re: Catherine's Wheel
Thanks Babbman. Now I shudder though. It's compared to the ringleschlagle in the instructions. I made one at MAKR in the 90's I found it tedious.
I'm going to make my decision as I also want to make some bols. We'll see, again T/U.

I'd love to try my hand at a ringschangle but have been unable to find any plans.... does anyone have a link or plans they could post?
