Gurminj Museum of Music Instruments

Aga Khan

I cannot do better than quote from their website :
"The Gurminj Museum of Musical Instruments was established in by renowned Tajik actor and musician Gurminj Zavkibekov () to showcase an extensive private collection of musical instruments from his native Badakhshan, which comprises the Pamir Mountain region of eastern Tajikistan and northeast Afghanistan. Zavkibekov envisioned the museum as a living home for music, a place where his Pamiri lutes, drums, flutes, and other instruments from across Central and West Asia would be played."
A visit is a very personal introduction to local, beautiful traditional music ; I was the only guest, but that did not diminish the enthusiastic performance of our host, the son of the founder.
I understand that this is part of the Nizari Ismaili community and that the Aga Khan heavily sponsors the museum ; the performance room is newly build with his subsidies. Because of their Shia denomination in the middle of a Sunny region, it is important that their tradition is maintained and protected.

Неординарный музей

Eyl

Musical interlude

The Gurminj Museum of Music Instruments is a marvelous little museum in Dushanbe. You can play the instruments (if you know how and are careful) there was a music lesson taking place while we were there and lots of great information available about all the instruments.

Fascinating Instrument Collection & Potential for a Concert

May • Arkadaşlar

This museum is small but packed with musical instruments, mostly from the Pamir Mts and Tajikistan but has some other instruments from around the world as well. Friendly musicians escort you through. Tajik and Russian speaking and some English depending on who is present. Musicians from the excellent folk band Samo can give a concert here if you pre-book and they aren't on a world tour, and they also have CDs for sale. This is local Tajik and Pamiri folk music, sung and played on local instruments, that you would hear in the valleys of the high Pamir off the Pamir Highway, or you could hear it at the museum and bring some home to hear again and again.

Погружение в местную музыкальную культуру

Eyl • Arkadaşlar

big collection of instruments, a lot of potential, but poorly done.

Ağu • Çiftler

It's easy to miss and looks like you're entering someone's private home. Inside, a handful of older men were eating lunch and one of them turned on the lights at the museum. This place has a lot of potential to be greatly interesting with some thought and effort by the owners. There are maybe instruments in 5 rooms from all around Central Asia, poorly lit (one room's lights had burnt out and we had to use our cell phone flash to see), and without any explanation. One room seemed to have a costume of Rostam with his helmet, a shield, and some reference to perhaps an opera.

I think it would be great if we had seen a live performance or if someone could talk about or answer questions about the instruments. Absent of a live guide, perhaps some text explaining what the instruments are, their history, their origin, and how they ended up in the museum. Even better would be better lighting in each of the rooms with spotlights or at least fluorescent lightbulbs in each room. I think an investment of $ USD for better lighting and text descriptions would really improve this place. If they really wanted to make it better, maybe create an audio guide with samples of the instruments' sounds.

We didn't get any live performance when we came and they asked us for 5 TJS each (2 people). It's cheap, but I probably wouldn't want to pay much more than that given its current setup. The neighborhood has a few Iranian restaurants which looked interesting and a contrast to the typical Tajik food. It's minute walking distance from the Ismoil Somani statue.

So much scope!

Buried away in Dushanbe is this interesting collection of musical instruments. What a pity there are no descriptions or information about origins.

Small but fascinating

Tem • Yalnız

There are instruments from mainly the Central Asia and the Badakhshan region. I am very glad I went to this museum because it showcases instruments that I had no idea existed, all of different sizes and shapes. There were instruments that took on such foreign forms I couldn't stop looking over them. I was pleasantly surprised also with a performance of traditional folk music. I'm not entirely sure if the 30 somoni (~$ USD) I paid was for the entrance fee or for the performance, but either way it was worth it.

A quick and fascinating visit

Haz • Yalnız

What a treasure. I was the only visitor at the time. There was an American student learning to play one of the instruments. The teacher gave a demonstration on a couple for me to hear. If there had been more of us other musicians would have joined for a performance

Tiny but Mighty

May • Arkadaşlar

Visiting this small museum that is located in someone's house was one of the highlights of our trip to Tajikistan. What made our visit so rewarding here is that we were treated to a performance of folk music from the Pamir area of the country. Three musicians performed, including the owner of the museum. The music was at times haunting and at times upbeat; it was always remarkable. I thanked my lucky stars that there were CD's to purchase. There is also a very friendly grey and black striped cat who greeted us warmly.
