Düş kurma ve kitap okurken gerçekleşen zihinsel canlandırma, yaygın zihinsel imge örneklerindendir. Atletlerin, antrenman sırasında veya yarışma öncesi, onları amaçlarına başarıyla ulaştıracak her bir adımı ana hatlarıyla zihinlerine çağırması da bir diğer örnek olarak verilebilir[24]. Müzisyen şarkıyı duyduğunda, şarkıyı tamamen ses nitelikleriyle duymasının yanı sıra, kimi zamanlar da şarkının notalarını kafasının içinde ‘görür’[25]. Bu durum artçıl etkiden farklı sayılır, bakılan görüntü ortadan kalktıktan sonra görsel alanda bir süre daha izlenebilen ardışık görüntü gibidir. Zihnimizde imgeyi canladırmak istemli bir davranış olabilir, bu nedenle çeşitli derecelerde bilinçli kontrol altında olarak nitelendirilebilir.

Psikolog ve bilişel bilim insanı Steven Pinker’a[26] göre, yeryüzündeki deneyimlerimiz zihnimize zihinsel imgeler olarak yansımaktadır. Bu zihinsel imgeler daha sonra diğerleriyle ilişkilendirilebilir veya karşılaştırılabilir, ve tamamen yeni imgeler sentezleyebilmek için kullanılabilir. Bu görüşte, zihinsel imgeler sayesinde sonucu doğrudan deneyimlememize gerek kalmadan zihnimizdeki imgelerin olası dizilişlerini formüle edip dünyamızın çalışmasıyla ilgili yararlı teoriler oluşturabiliriz. Bu yeteneğin diğer canlılarda olup olmadığı tartışılmaktadır. Zihinsel imgelerin zihnimizde nasıl oluşturuldukları hakkında bazı teoriler vardır. Bunlardan bazıları, İkili Kodlama Teorisi, Kavramsal-Önermesel Hipotez ve İşlevsel-Eşitlik Hipotezidir. 1971 yılında Allan Paivio tarafından oluşturulan İkili Kodlama Teorisine göre beynimizdeki bilgiyi temsil etmek için iki ayrı kod kullanırız: imge kodları ve sözel kodlar. İmge kodları, bir köpeği düşünürken onun fotoğrafını aklına getirmeye benzer. Oysaki, sözel kod ‘köpek’ kelimesini aklına getirmek gibidir[27]. Bir diğer örnek, adalet veya aşk gibi soyut kelimeleri aklına getirmek ile fil ve sandalye gibi somut kelimeleri aklına getirmek arasındaki farktır. Soyut kelimeler akla geldiğinde, onları tanımlayan veya açıklayan kelimeler bulmak yani onları sözel kodlar olarak düşünmek daha kolaydır. Somut kelimelerde ise, imge kodlarını kullanmak ve insan veya sandalyenin fotoğrafını zihne getirmek, onlarla ilişkili ve onları tasvir eden kelimeleri zihne getirmekten genellikle daha kolaydır.

Kavramsal-Önermesel Hipotez, imgeleri soysal önermesel kod formunda depolamayı içerir. Bu kodlar imgenin kendisini değil, kavramın anlamını depolar. Önermesel kodlar ya imgeyi tasvir eder veya temsilidir. Daha sonra bu önermesel kodlar zihinsel imge oluşturmak için sözel ve görsel kod içine aktarılır[28].

İşlevsel-Eşitlik Hipotezine göre ise, zihinsel imgeler fiziksel nesnelerin fiili algılanmasıyla aynı şekilde çalışan ‘içsel temsil’lerdir.[29]. Bir başka ifadeyle, köpek kelimesi okunduğunda zihne gelen köpek fotoğrafı, bir kişi sanki gerçek bir köpeğe bakıyormuş gibi yorumlanır.
