he first woman-cosmonaut was born in in Yaroslavl in the family of immigrants from Belarus. Valentina's father was killed in the Russo-Finnish war, so her mother who was working at a textile factory had to raise her three children on her own. Valentina's life developed according to a scheme standard for a provincial Soviet girl: school, technical college, factory. However, in Tereshkova suddenly grew interested in parachuting popular at that time, and this event turned out to influence all her future. After the first successful flights of male cosmonauts, the USSR leadership had an idea to send a woman into space. Already in , the search for suitable candidates began, and those were supposed to meet the following requirements: a parachutist of the age below 30, height – below cm and weight – under 70 kg. Of the hundreds of applicants, only five were chosen, among whom there was also Tereshkova. The group was personally formed by Yuri Gagarin. Two women's crews were initially assumed to go into space at once, however the plan was later rethought. Only one candidate had to be chosen, and Tereshkova was singled out of the group. The political motive played its own role — unlike her competitors, Valentina came from a working family. In addition, the fact that her father had been killed in war was also taken into account. The first woman-cosmonaut in the history of the humankind went into space on the spaceship “Vostok-6” on June 16th, It is noteworthy that her family learned about this only from a TV program. After almost three days of flight, Valentine, who completed 48 turns around the Earth, landed safely in Altai Krai. Until now, she remains the only woman to have made a single human spaceflight.

ОДНА МАЧАНКА НА ДВОИХ ONE “MACHANKA” FOR TWO The Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to the Republic of Belarus Joseph Migash has a rich experience in working in politics — he was one of the founders of the Party of the Democratic Left and for almost a year served as the President of the country. However, at the diplomatic post, he feels no worse and with a smile tells astory of his falling in love with Belarus. In an interview with Guest Guide, he explains why the Belarusian cuisine is close to the Slovaks and what the expression "was born with skis on one’s feet" means.

 Prior to your Minsk appointment, you were heading the embassies of Slovakia in Moscow and Kiev. Did Belarus manage to surprise you?

 What helped you to know Belarus?

Конечно смогла. Но не в первый визит, и даже не в первые четыре, поскольку они были сугубо деловыми, — сами понимаете, если видишь только отель и аэропорт между деловыми встречами, то страны, считай, и не видел. В составе официальной миссии ответственность совершенно другая — и перед своей страной, и перед Беларусью. Посол обязан быть подготовлен и должен знать страну, в которой ему предстоит работать.

Мое прошлое. (Смеется.) Я выпускник Киевского национального университета имени Шевченко — уже в студенчестве изъездил все постсоветское (а тогда еще советское) пространство, меня даже отправили в составе строительного отряда на БАМ. Там были ребята со всех социалистических республик, поэтому мои знания, в частности о Беларуси, никак нельзя было назвать опосредованными.

Of course, it did. But not during the first visit, or even not in the first four, because they were purely business — you know, if you see only the hotel and the airport in breaks between business meetings, you can hardly claim to have seen the country. As a part of the official mission, the responsibility is totally different — both for your own country and for Belarus. The ambassador must be prepared and must know the country in which he is to work. My past. (Laughs.) I'm a graduate of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev — as a student I already traveled around the post-Soviet (and at those times – Soviet) countries, I was even sent as a part of a construction brigadeto the Baikal-Amur Mainline. There were the guys from all the socialist republics, so my knowledge, in particularly about Belarus, could never be called indirect.

 Со времен распада СССР многое изменилось, в том числе и в Беларуси, — наверняка вы заметили это, когда приступили к работе в миссии.

Разумеется. Когда я приехал в Беларусь как посол, у меня в голове была какая-то обобщенная картинка чистой и культурной страны. Но что поразило меня и мою семью, так это сельские пейзажи, будто с картинки, — вспаханные поля, ровные дороги, ухоженные фермерские постройки. В таком виде словаки все это, к сожалению, сохранить не смогли. Это могут подтвердить и мои друзья, которых я приглашаю сюда погостить. Вы молодцы!

 A lot has changed since the collapse of the Soviet Union, in Belarus as well — you probably noticed this when you were starting your work in the mission.

I certainly did. When I came to Belarus as an ambassador, I had some generalized mental picture of a clean and cultured country. But it was the rural landscapes which struck me and my family — plowed fields, smooth roads, well-kept farms. Unfortunately, the Slovaks did not manage to preserve all those in such a form. This can be confirmed by my friends, whom I invite to visit the country. You did a good job!

 Отойдем немного от нашего общего прошлого и перейдем к настоящему. Словакия — страна католическая, а Беларусь позиционируется как светское государство. Чувствуете ли вы эту разницу?

 Let's switch from our common past to the present. Slovakia is a Catholic country, and Belarus positions itself as a secular state. Do you feel this difference?

Да, она есть, но ощущается не так остро. В Словакии, например, все еще сохраняется тенденция отдавать женщине в семье роль хранительницы очага. Но я бы предпочел утверждать, что религия нас объединяет, ведь основные гражданские добродетели, прописанные в конституциях Словакии и Беларуси, вполне соответствуют библейским. К слову, недавно я читал лекцию на историческом факультете БГУ и подчеркнул для студентов, что в Беларуси с точки зрения отношения конфессий созданы идеальные условия: у вас и православные, и католики, и лютеране, и иудеи, и мусульмане. Вот о чем нужно рассказывать в первую очередь иностранцам — о том, что вам удалось найти образцовый modus vivendi для людей с разными взглядами на жизнь. Я здесь уже полтора года, но ни в одной стране, где мне пришлось служить, я подобного не наблюдал.

 А, помимо мирной атмосферы, чем еще Беларусь может привлечь словака?

Я отвечу коротко: землей.

I do, it is definitely present, although not experienced so evidently. In Slovakia, for example, there is still a tendency to assign a woman the role of the family’s domestic goddess. But I would prefer to assert that religion unites us, because the basic civil virtues prescribed in the constitutions of both Slovakia and Belarus are in full compliance with the Biblical ones. By the way, I have recently given a lecture at the Faculty of History of the Belarusian State University and focused the students’ attention on the fact that in Belarus from the point of view of the relations between the confessions, ideal conditions had been created: here you have the Orthodox, Catholics, Lutherans, Jews and Muslims. That's what you need to tell foreigners in the first place – you need to say that you managed to find an exemplary “modus vivendi” for people with different life views. I have been here for a year and a half, but I have not seen anything like this in any country where I had to work.  And besides peaceful atmosphere — how else

can Belarus attract a Slovak?

I will give a short answer – with its land.

«Белорусский язык очень похож на словацкий — это чувствуется в самих корнях слов, которые когда-то давным-давно произносила наша с вами общая мама. Моя дочка учится в обычной белорусской школе, у нее белорусский три раза в неделю, и мне даже немножко стыдно, что она уже давно говорит на „мове“ куда лучше, чем ее отец-дипломат!»

 Could you, please, explain what you mean?

Everything is simple: the Belarusians are Slavs, and the Slovaks are Slavs. And with feudalism, capitalism, and socialism, our roots were in a fertile land — we plowed it, we were fed by it, we defended it and died for it. Our peoples share the common picture of the world, so there is no need to somehow force the Slovaks to love Belarus – it is just enough to once show them your fields, forests and lakes.

Все просто: белорусы — славяне, и словаки — славяне. И при феодализме, и при капитализме, и при социализме наши корни были в плодородной земле — ее мы вспахивали, с нее мы кормились, ее мы защищали и гибли за нее. У нас с вами общие картины мира, поэтому насильно словака влюблять в Беларусь не придется — ему достаточно один раз увидеть ваши поля, леса и озера.

Город для nешеходов и тоска nо горам  А если немного сузить область поиска — поля, леса и озера какого региона Беларуси вы бы показали словаку в первую очередь?

В Гродненской области, но это лично мое предпочтение. Дело в том, что в этом регионе у моего друга в ста метрах от реки Неман есть прекрасная усадьба. Там, правда, летом много комаров, но бог с ними — они в эту пору везде! (Смеется.) Но там вокруг красивейшие леса, много рыбных и грибных мест. И сам город Гродно чем-то особенно меня привлекает. Возможно, литовцы могут обидеться, но в Вильнюсе, несмотря на сосредоточие памятников архитектуры, предстоит еще немало работы по благоустройству. А из Гродно сделали идеальный город для пеших прогулок.

 Ну, если вы часто бываете на той усадьбе у товарища, то можно сказать, что испытали все прелести белорусского агротуризма!

Усадьбу, конечно! Потому что это хоть немного утолило бы мою тоску по собственному деревенскому домику в Словакии — я там выращиваю коровок породы ангус. Невероятно красивые животные! Я бы хотел организовать там что-нибудь наподобие сельской школы, потому что у наших городских детей те же проблемы, что и у белорусских, — они не представляют, как вживую выглядят корова, коза или утка.  А по словацким горам не скучаете?

Честно признаться, да. Беларусь ведь гладкая, как доска! Чтобы прокатиться на лыжах, приходится искусственную горку в метров насыпать. А дома горы под метров высотой — ка-

The city for pedestrians and longing for the mountains  And if to narrow down the search – fields, forests and lakes of which region would you show the Slovaks in the first place?

I personally prefer those of Grodno region. The point is that in this region my friendhas a beautiful estate, just meters from the Neman River. To tell the truth, in summer there are a lot of mosquitoes there, but never mind — mosquitoes at this time are everywhere! (Laughs.) But there are the most beautiful forests around there, as well as numerous places perfect for fishing and mushrooming. And Grodno itself attracts me with something special. Perhaps the Lithuanians may take offense, but in Vilnius, despite the concentration of monuments of architecture, a lot has still to be done to improve the city’s look. As for Grodno, now it looks like a city ideal for hiking.

 Well, if you often stay at your friend’s estate, you can say you have experienced all the delights of Belarusian agrotourism!

I think that evennot every Belarusian has experienced them! (Laughs.)

 And if you wereto choose where to celebrate Christmas or New Year, would you choose a city or this estate?

The estate, of course! Because at least it would have somehow satisfied my longing for my own country house in Slovakia — I breed my own Angus cows there. They are incredibly beautiful animals! I would like to organize there something like a rural school, because our city children have the same problems as the Belarusian ones — they do not know what an actual cow, a goat or a duck look like.

"The Belarusian language is very similar to Slovak — it is felt in the very origin of the words our common mother used to say a long time ago. My daughter studies in an ordinary Belarusian school, she has Belarusian three times a week, and I'm even a little bit ashamed that she speaks "mova" much better than her father-diplomat!"

Грибная охота и интернациональная верещака  Друг угощает вас какими-нибудь национальными блюдами в усадьбе у Немана?

Да, часто отведываю там грибной суп и драники.  Понимаю, куда же без драников.

Зато ингредиенты для грибного супа я собираю лично сам — выхожу на охоту в лесочки в окрестностях Немана. Но больше всего грибов я однажды насобирал в Беловежской Пуще: как носом чуял, что будут хорошие выходные, — собрался и поехал в Брестскую область. У меня до сих пор холодильник забит подосиновиками и лисичками!  С ними особенно хорошо готовить белорусскую мачанку.

Словацкую тоже. Вы думаете, они чем-то различаются? (Смеется.) Между белорусской мачанкой и каким-нибудь модным сетом суши я всегда выберу первую — ведь она будет напоминать мне о Родине!

 And don’t you miss the Slovak mountains?

Honestly, I do. Because Belarus is smooth as a board! To ski, you have to create an artificial meters’hill. Whereas in my home country there are mountains around meters high – ski as much as you like. It is not surprising that in Slovakia people are born, as we say, "with skis on their feet".

Mushroom hunting and international “vereshchaka”  Does your friend treat you to some national dishes at his Neman's homestead?

Yes, I often eat mushroom soup and draniki there.

 Certainly, how can people go without draniki.

But I pick mushroom soup ingredients myself going “hunting”for them in the vicinity of the Neman woods. But it was in Belovezhskaya Pushcha where I was lucky to pick their biggest number –as I had a gut feeling that there would be a good weekend, so I decided to head off to Brest region. I still have a fridge filled with boletus and chanterelles!  They are especially good for Belarusian “machanka”.

The Slovak one, too. Do you think they differ much? (Laughs.) If I am to choose between a Belarusian “machanka” and some fashionable sushi set I always choose the former — after all, it will remind me of the Motherland!
