There's an image comparison method described as a "running difference", which is used to visualize changes between two images taken over a period of time. One simple formula is "img2 + gray50 - img1". This can be used to create a graph to see changes in, for example, sea levels on shorelines, activity in the Sun's atmosphere, etc. (Examples of some inputs and output below.)

Using two x JP2 images of the Sun, taken two hours apart, from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite, this command using takes 43 seconds to complete (IMv7 Windows 10)
