Lauryn Hill Says Blame ‘Our Ancestors’ For Daughter’s Trauma, Says Her Kids Got ‘The Discipline That Black Children Get’

Lauryn Hill’s daughter Selah Marley took to the Internet to share some thoughts on her superstar mother and famous family father and people were shocked by some of the allegations and statements she made. The now year old is coming into her own as an adult and has taken to reminiscing about her life and now her mother has responded about her infamous post.

In , Hill spoke briefly about her relationship to Selah’s father Rohan to Rolling Stone when she had another baby – that wasn’t Rohan’s. She told the magazine that her and Marley “have a long and complex history about which many inaccuracies have been reported since the beginning. To speculate without the facts can only cause people to form wrong conclusions. We both value privacy and for that reason on defend and preserve our right to it.”

Selah’s father, Rohan Marley, is indeed one of the sons of musical legend Bob Marley. Having met Lauryn Hill in , the pair had 5 children together despite the fact that they largely lived apart most of their relationship. Selah is the second born of the five and though her parents’ relationship finally came to an end in , it seems as if her father’s been largely absent, according to Selah’s post.

Her mother Lauryn Hill has had her own share of thoughts and issues over the years post her “Miseducation” heydays. Lauryn’s become synonymous with being late, as she over the years has developed a reputation for appearing hours later after the start time of her concerts. After her blockbuster debut album, Hill went through a series of ups and downs that seemed to stymie her career. Over the past few years however, she’s returned to the stage and touring and has seemingly settled into the legacy artist that she is.

Selah, amongst other things, called mother Hill a “mother***ker” in the video, alluding to the fact that their relationship and her mother’s actions over the years are the reason that she was traumatized as a child. She also shared that her mother and father “hated” each other and how Selah told her mother once that she should have “aborted” her.

Throughout the video, Selah also seems to long after her father repeatedly while blaming him for not being there. Hill and Marley’s relationship is famous for being largely apart and now we’re seeing the fallout from one of their oldest children and how it has affected them as adults.

Now, Lauryn herself has responded to her daughter’s post and she’s weighed in like only a mother could, detailing that she’s spoken with her daughter and is understanding of the journey that she’s undertaken to understand her upraising.

“My children are strong-willed and powerful, better I discipline them at home than have them shot down in the streets or locked up. They are not necessarily passive people, and they’re also learning how to navigate a world full of beauty but also full of danger,” Lauryn wrote in a lengthy post that she shared with her own followers. “People are quick to judge the content of Selah’s conversation without understanding the gravity of her life.”

“Could you imagine what the world would look like if someone said ‘hey, this or that artist has an addiction problem, or this one is being taken advantage of, how can we help?’ rather than turning it into news. I wonder who’d still be here today?”

Lauryn’s clearly unafraid of the tough conversations that her growing children might need to have with her. Growing up in the spotlight of such an accomplished, lauded artist is never easy but kudos to Lauryn for seemingly empowering them to grow in a healthy and safe space.

Easy and Delicious Shredded Tofu Shawarma

You know those times when you cook and the whole house smells like a warm hug, and everyone says how good it smells? Doesn&#;t that feel awesome? If you relish those times like I do, then you are in luck because the smells you get while this dish is roasting are unbelievably mouth watering. It even gets the kid seal of approval! My older son woke up to these smells and said with his eyes half closed, &#;Mom, it smells good in here!&#; Oh. My. Heart. Later when we were involved in my most favorite activity, (which if you don&#;t know by now is eating), my kids chowed down and Sam ate two huge bowls of salad with this delicious shawarma spiced tofu on top. TWO BOWLS OF SALAD!

My top tip for this recipe is to use extra firm tofu that has been frozen, thawed, and pressed. The texture will be more spongy and a bit more chewy, which is exactly what you&#;ll want. All those amazing spices will get stuck in the newly formed crevices on your tofu, which equals more flavor explosions in your mouth.

You can use the roasted shawarma tofu on a salad, in a wrap, or straight from the container for a healthy yet tasty midnight snack. It goes perfectly with my Easy Creamy Hummus.

Ingredients

1 block (g) of extra firm tofu, frozen and thawed, then pressed to remove as much excess moisture as possible
2 tbs of extra virgin olive oil (plus extra for roasting)
tsp cumin
tsp paprika
1/2 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp turmeric
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp cinnamon
2 cloves garlic, crushed
juice of 1 lemon, freshly squeezed
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/8 tsp ground black pepper

Instructions

Preheat oven to degrees C.
Combine olive oil, spices, garlic and lemon juice in a large bowl. Test the mixture to see if the spice combo and ratios are to your liking. Adjust if desired.
Take chunks of the pressed tofu and tear into medium sized irregular shapes, placing them into the bowl with the spice mixture. They should have a shredded look and feel.
With clean hands, mix the tofu and spice mixture together. It will get a bit messy, sure, but it's a small price to pay for a flavor explosion, don't you think? Make sure every little nook and cranny of tofu is covered with the mixture.
Line a baking sheet with foil, and spread prepared tofu on it evenly. Bake for 15 minutes, then using tongs, mix and turn the tofu, trying to make sure as many of the lesser cooked sides are facing up. Drizzle with a bit more olive oil, then bake for an additional minutes. You are going for a golden brown color throughout the tofu, with nice crispy edges. A bit dry is OK, as you will have juicy veggies and sauces mixed with it later.
Remove from the oven and let cool. Then add to your salad or wrap, and close your eyes to fully enjoy the little bite of heaven you just ate.

Notes

You might want to double the recipe and either freeze or refrigerate the rest to use as a tasty protein for a busy weeknight meal.
