Ever spent more time exploring a game than you have actually trying to complete it? Staring at the finished result of the video game concept art, every chance you could get?

Yep, that was me…

Turning the camera angle to get a perfect shot of the scenery.

“Wait, wait. One second!” I say as my friend tells me to play the game. He doesn’t understand the beauty of the waterfall in the background…

The effort that goes into the artwork of a game has always fascinated me. The character designs and their outfits, the environment and how everything flows.

“I want to create my own video game concept art,” I said to myself.

Little did I know, that innocent thought would soon turn into a passion, that would later consume me.

Since then, I’ve spent my time doodling away. Creating animal hybrids and evolutions of my favourite characters.

If you’re reading this post, you must have had a similar thought.

So then, do you want to create your own video game concept art but don’t know where to start?

No problem, let me help you out.

What is video game concept art?

Video game concept art is when an artist creates a character or part of their world with the ideas in their head.

They start off with an idea and moving on to creating thumbnail sketches. These are a series of quick sketchy silhouettes for their character idea.

They try to make the character recognisable when completely blacked out. This is important when creating an original character. The easier you can tell a character’s silhouette apart, the better.

A fantastic example of this is one created by Colin Fix of the Big sister for the game Bioshock 2:

You can see that the character is recognisable without any colour or shading.

The big sister is recognisable because of the pose, lithe figure and wires on its body. It’s creepy yet human-like and also contains sea like elements with the helmet.

After thumbnailing, comes the refining stage. A few ideas get picked and developed before ending up with a final draft used in the finished product.

With concept art, there are many iterations in a character’s development.

Creating many variations of the character helps to explore different themes. This guides the direction of the concept. You can also mix parts of the variations and see which ones go together to get the best character possible.

This differs from illustration work which frames the topic in a polished format. The illustration helps make the topic look its best. There is a strong focus on composition with each element flowing together.

Good composition means every part goes together in a cinematic way. This highlights certain parts of the picture that the artist wants the audience to look at. Concept art focuses more on the design elements.

Types of concept art specialisations

There are 3 major specialisations of video game concept art. These are character design, environment design and vehicle design.

Character Design

Character design has a focus on the characters that exist within the story and the world. They are the ones that will be most relatable to the audience, thus making them the most recognisable.

You should pay attention to a character’s outfit as it makes the character stand out. It also signals to the audience the type of world that the character exists in and their personality.

Making a killer design

You can make characters stand out through colour or shape language.

The colour of a character can have an influence on how the audience perceives them. For example, the main character is usually red because it has heroic connotations. Think the red power ranger, Nintendo’s Mario and Kratos from God of War.

With shape language, villains usually have sharp edges as it signals danger. Whereas a character with rounded edges is more comforting and safe.

Here is an example of character concept art created by the talented Zeronis. This is the concept for Nidalee from the game League of Legends in her Headhunter skin:

The skulls, ornaments and face paint on Nidalee in the picture conveys that she is a hunter. The muted colours show that she is stealthy and prefers to hunt whilst camouflaged. Finally, the sharp edges on her outfit conveys danger and how she means business.

Besides character design, there is also creating weapons for attack or defence.

They should match the outfit that the characters are wearing. Insignias or motifs used on both the character design and weapons help them match.

A concept artist may also choose to create their own creature designs. These could be a hybrid of animals or their own interpretation of creatures on other planets. These creatures may end up being the casts mascot or part of the planet’s wildlife.

Here is an example of creature concept art created by Stephen Oakley for the game Evolve:

The creature is alien, yet borrows inspiration from real life animals and insects.

The wings resemble dragonfly wings, the legs look crab-like, the left claw looks like a birds foot. The spikes on the back are also in a lizard-like fashion. There is inspiration all around you, you need to reference real life.

Environment Design

Environment concept art is the land and surroundings that take place in the game.

These include the buildings, trees and backgrounds that the characters would interact with. The environment design helps set the mood for the game the characters personality. It also immerses the player, making them feel like they are in the game.

Below is an example of environment concept art created by Lloyd Allan for the game Horizon Zero Dawn:

The setting makes you feel claustrophobic due to the dark and dingy atmosphere.

The ray of light makes you feel like there is hope and is almost like it lights up the way to go. The plant growth adds to the atmosphere and shows that it’s been a while since explored.

Prop concept art is the objects in the environment that make up the surroundings. These may be items that the main character can interact with. They can make the environment familiar if they repeated in the game like save points.

Here is an example of prop design created by MeckanicalMind. This is the concept for Fongoid Props from the game Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time:

Prop design can be fun. You can take inspiration from everyday objects and make them fit the theme of the world you create them for.

Vehicle Design

Vehicle concept art is the machines used to transport the character around. These can be land-based like cars, sky based like aeroplanes, or sea-based like submarines and ships.

Below is an example of vehicle design created by up-and-coming concept artist Isabella De Ocampo.

This tractor design combat based. Its big tyres help to traverse rocky floor. The front end ram/rake helps to plough into enemies and it’s also fitted with guns and cannons to fight off enemies.

Tools used to create concept art

So now you know the types of video game concept art you can create, you might be wondering what tools you can use to create it.

No? Well too bad, I’m going to tell you anyway… Ha!

First, you should know that there are two major forms of materials. You can either go digital, or you can go traditional.

Digital forms include a graphics tablet paired with a software like photoshop.

There is also another method you can use… A mouse. But please don’t, you’re better off saving up for a cheap graphics tablet. It’s much easier to use and you’re far less likely to pull your hair out in the process.

Photoshop is the most common software used by professionals. A little expensive if you’re starting out. Still, you can use it to create mesmerising pieces as there are so many tools at your disposal.

The other form is through traditional art. This is creating art with materials and paper.

Most people start off with a pencil and paper as this is the cheapest method. Others may also experiment with materials like chalk and charcoal, watercolour and oil pastels. Any art supply goes!

Some may use traditional art because you can feel every stroke you take, rather than a software doing it for you.

Which tools should I use?

Many concept artists opt for the digital route because it is what is most used by games companies.

Use what works best for you though as it good to get a feel of as many art resources as you can. After all, the whole point of being a concept artist is exploring until you can get the best result!

Concept art is a great way to channel that creative energy. You can use it to create new elements used in the next best-selling game.
