Women’s economic empowerment is a triumph of women to be capable of choosing and controlling their economic activities and incomes.

It is also an enhancement of women’s rights to enable them to have control over their lives and also contribute to the society at large. The main objective of women’s economic empowerment is to create just and equitable societies.

In a ceremony that was attended by a huge delegation from the Germany government and Embassy plus the Human Help Network President Mr. Ewald Dietrich John Baptist and his delegation visited Strive Foundation Rwanda’s economically empowered women in Huye who received them warmly at their working sites.

These women run different activities on a daily basis that include Brick lying and Fish farming, and these activities have highly changed these women’s lives at least to a better standard today.

It is in that regard that Strive Foundation Rwanda wishes to acknowledge the kindhearted partnership with the Human Help Network, Aktion tagwerk for their endurance in the journey of mentoring these women towards changing their lives and really various lives have changed.

It almost goes without saying&#; but I&#;ll say it anyway! MOST new grad nurses enter the workforce as a night shift nurse. I am no different; after graduating I started right in as a night shift nurse.

For me, nights make the most sense. I enjoy the autonomy and have ALWAYS been a night person. I mean, its way easier to be awake and busy at 4am than it is to have to get out of bed and start the day at 4am! Although ideal for me, there are some shifts that require a little push to get through! So I&#;ve curated a &#;Top 10&#; list for slaying night shift:

1) PLAN AHEAD! Always know what your schedule is in advance so that you can map out your week! My hospital allows us to do schedule request for the upcoming month. There is no guarantee that you will get what you requested but doing this prevents you from being plugged in and having no control over what your month looks like. I typically request to work 3 nights in a row. This can be rough and many nurses prefer to have their days spread out. However, working the 3 in a row gives you a long stretch of off days (no need to go into why that can be great)!

2) SLEEP! It&#;s important that you get adequate sleep. However, its equally important to not over think it. If you&#;re doing a 3 in a row I suggest a solid hours the night before shift 1. For me this is usually 10p-7am. I&#;ll start my day with a light breakfast, run a few errands, and work on blog content. I usually lay down for a pre-work nap around 11am and then I&#;m up between to get ready for work.

3) FOOD! Food is literally the fuel our bodies need to function and do all the things we push it to do on a daily basis! If you&#;re working the night shift it is important to fuel your body in the right way. First things first, you can NEVER be sure how your night will go; no matter how much you plan! So the best way to avoid a mid-shift crash is to eat something nutritious but not too heavy before even heading out the door! To add to this, snacks will get you through! I always carry a pack of cashews, crackers, packets of cashew butter; really anything that I can grab & grub in a crunch when I don&#;t have a chance to sit and eat. Lastly, Pack a really good dinner! It gives you something good to look forward to during a hectic shift! And in case you haven&#;t noticed the theme of night shift eating, keep it nutritious but light such as a nice sized salad will do. overeating and heavier meals will make you sleepy and drag! Try to avoid this as much as possible.

4) HYDRATE! Never underestimate the power of H2O! I take my water with the works so that it can also give me a little boost! So in the water goes lemons, mint and ginger. A very refreshing pick me up! And speaking of pick me ups&#; COFFEE! Some will disagree, however, to get through my shift there are two crucial moments for caffeine: 1) around 10pm, after my first round of assessments and after 3am, right before third round assessments. Why? Coffee around 10pm helps carry me through the shift, and reminds my brain that I am not supposed to be climbing into bed to watch &#;Poetic Justice&#;, &#;Good Fellas&#;, or &#;Pretty Woman&#; for the billionth time before I fall asleep! Coffee around 3am keeps me AAOx3 for the end of the shift leading up to shift change!

5) TIME MANAGEMENT!(always be prepared)! Everything from Laying out your scrubs and packing your work bag the day before your shift, to meal prepping your dinners for the week will help you prevent you from having to rush around right before having to leave out. This way, you&#;re on time for your shift, and less anxious because you&#;re able to take your time and ease into it. During your shift, it is imperative that you prioritize your time! I request that the previous shift nurse does a bedside report with me for each of my patients. This gives me the opportunity to do a quick scan of my patients and their environment so that I know right from the beginning what needs to be done. For example: are my fluids running dry, does the patient require a linen change, is all tubing properly tapped? This allows me to go into the patient&#;s assessment with all necessary supplies so that there is no back and forth. Bedside report is also a plus because it allows the oncoming and precious shift nurse to verify things like IV and central line sites. if that IV is bad I&#;ll have the previous shift nurse assist with changing it right then and there. I can&#;t tell you how many times getting a new IV started has slowed down my shift! After report, I go through all of my patients order and on the sign-out/report sheet write down all pending labs, meds and pertinent information for my shift. This keeps me ahead as much as possible. All sheets get stapled together so that I have it all with me at all times. This is a big one for me! My biggest challenge has always been time management! I have come to learn (baptism by fire) how proper time management can make or break your shift, or even your work week! Try as best as you can to stay ahead as much as you can.

6) ANTICIPATE THE WORST! This kinda goes along with point five. But its important enough to have a bullet of its own. I know, I probably just stressed you all the way out&#;but let me explain. This is medicine and human lives we&#;re dealing with, and we aren&#;t in control of all the things that may or may not happen, and on night shift there isn&#;t as much readily available support as there is on days. Check each room to be certain that it is stocked with with proper emergency equipment. Have an intubated patient? All re-intubation supplies should be available at the bedside. On admission? Have the appropriate size laryngoscope and ETT tubes on you, you never know when your admission will be a crash C-section instead of something more routine. Have your room prepared and all admission supplies set and ready to go! This keeps you ahead of the game and ready for almost anything.

7) TIMELY ASSESSMENTS! Try to assess each patient and check all orders before evening rounds. This allows you to give a proper update to the provider when asked, have any expiring orders renewed and question any orders that aren&#;t clear and report any concerns before they are asleep or tied up in an emergency. This helps prevent that new grad inner battle of &#;is this something to wake the provider for?&#;.

8) FIND YOUR PERSON/PEOPLE! No night shift, or any shift for that matter can function smoothly without great teamwork! Trust me! your people jump in and save you on those nights when you&#;re drowning! They are there to give you solid advice when you need it most and help uplift you during those really tough moments! A great group of team mates is essential!

9) ENJOY YOUR OFF DAYS! This may seem obvious but it&#;s super important. As nurses we spend our days caring for other people and we work long hours. No matter how much we love what we do, this can be exhausting. So when your days of roll around take care of YOU. Do something that makes you happy and allows you to unwind. I have a great post about that here! These self care days will look different for each person. It truly depends on what makes you feel whole outside of the work place. So take a moment and figure out what that is and be sure to make it a priority.

10) LAST BUT NOT LEAST... Don&#;t over think it! Doing so will only add unnecessary stress to your life! I mean, come one Sis! You made it through nursing school AND you passed NCLEX! You got this, and anything that comes your way!
