Introduction

Hello everyone, if you’ve visited my blog in the past, you probably know that I like to write about topics such as spirituality, mental struggles, and growth. And if you haven’t I greet you wholeheartedly.

In the few posts that I’ve written, I talked a lot about my spiritual growth and how this came about, so if you’re interested in reading those stories or want to enjoy a little refresher feel free to check them out here. Usually, these posts were very long, and I would work on them for about a week or two. I intend to change this from now on and instead want to focus on writing more posts regularly.

There are a couple of reasons for that and all of them have to do with being paralyzed by insecurity. Insecurity has been a general theme in my life which I recently decided to take head-on. It was also the primary reason I stopped writing at the time. I was feeling overwhelmed and was very insecure about myself. This is furthermore why my posts were so long because I was being too perfectionistic about it.

“Insecurity kills all that is beautiful.”

~Demi Lovato

Relapse

At the time that I was posting on my blog, I was sober and talked about my previous relationship with weed. Regrettably, after that summer I completely relapsed into my old habits. Three months after I smoked my first joint that year I was back to smoking daily. Alongside it enforced even deeper feelings of regret, shame, and insecurity. But why was I feeling so insecure in the first place?

Looking back at it now, I remember being extremely ambitious at the time. My girlfriend (now fiancee) and I just got together, and I was ready to start my dream life. At least I thought I was.

I never really addressed the problem of insecurity. I was just trying to fake it ‘til I made it, which can be an effective strategy from time to time. But it can get difficult if insecurity is so deeply rooted in your survival strategy.

You might be wondering what I was so insecure about. At the time it was many things. First of all, I had no idea where my career was going. I never completed a study and was worried that if my newly found girlfriend were to see my inability to become successful the relationship wouldn’t last. As a result, I tried extra hard to become a person of significance. And over the past 2 years, I’ve started and quit multiple entrepreneurial endeavors.

So as you can see the problem I was trying to avoid led me to my failures. Fortunately for me though, my girlfriend was very understanding of the situation. She loves me no matter what person I become.

“Only the insecure strive for security.”

~Wayne Dyer

The Root Of The Problem

Not long ago, I quit weed again and this time I made it a very conscious undertaking. I made sure to have people to talk to and aid me through the entire process. I wrote daily in my diary to make sure I never forget why I quit and which things triggered me to smoke weed. I’ll write about this more in-depth in the upcoming posts.

As I’ve been focussing on my insecurity issues it occurred to me that I’ve had troubles dealing with this my entire life. This is also presumably the main reason I never finished a study, and in more recent times didn’t manage to succeed as an entrepreneur. Every time the going got tough I felt overwhelmed and instead of breaking through this resistance I just grabbed the first thing that distracted me from this uneasy feeling. Most of the time, this was weed, but another one of my favorite distraction tools was gaming.

Over the years it has come to grow on me that this is indeed the case. I am distracting myself whenever I feel overwhelmed and need to stop doing it and start working on the things that I see myself doing in the future. The problem has been that all of this primarily happens unconsciously. And so without even thinking about it, I would already be smoking a joint or have started up a video game.

One of my favorite things to tell myself was that I just genuinely liked doing these things. The underlying frustration that came from that I simply redirected onto other things or people.

For example:

‘Why are my teammates so bad at this game?’

‘Why aren’t people just nice to each other?’

There was always a way to redirect my frustrations in some way, while in reality I was frustrated with myself for not pushing through the resistance I felt. It’s been this way for a very long time. When I was a teenager I would do the same thing.

“Sometimes our thoughts are backed by so much insecurity that they create lies we believe.”

The Solution

There are probably hundreds of approaches to fixing this problem. Chances are likely that I’ve read or have known about all of them for a while now. Which in a way further developed the issues I was dealing with. I call this Paralysis By Overanalysis. Simply put, I’d rather engage in learning about how to deal with the problem than deal with the actual problem.

This, in turn, would result in feeling even more insecure, because every time I learned a new solution another thing was added to the List Of Things I Need To Do, But Can’t For Some Reason.

This is also why being addicted to something is so incredibly dangerous because whatever reasoning I had to engage in the addiction stemmed from some kind of negative emotion. The interaction is always cyclical. In the very same way, the solutions I might find can be cyclical.

Anyone outside of the same addiction pattern would simply tell me to quit. And this is the only real solution to any addiction. The result of quitting brought up that negative emotion I had been avoiding for years now, insecurity.

Aside from writing about it and putting my insecurities on paper for everyone to read, I meditate on it every morning. I sit down and let myself get into a deep trance state. After I reach the state of being completely relaxed, I bring up this feeling of insecurity and observe it as if it wasn’t me. Then I acknowledge to myself that this is the feeling I want to overcome and that I desire to be free from it.

So far it felt like I’ve made huge progress in this. My insecurities do still arise, and I certainly have a long way to go, but working on it actively has unleashed a bunch of energy within me. I can now work on my career without feeling like a failure. I started working on art with a passion I’ve never felt before and have rekindled with the beauty of writing. These are just the first steps and I’m excited to keep working towards the life that I dream about.

“It’s only when you get beyond the emotion of fear and move into the unknown -despite the fear- that you turn your fear into passion and courage.”

~Dr. Joe Dispenza

Last Words

Thank you for reading this post, and I hope that you enjoyed reading it. If there’s anything you recognized about yourself or want to share with me, feel free to leave a comment. As I said earlier I’m making it a goal to post regularly. Some of the upcoming topics I want to write about are motivation, quitting weed, and meditation. On top, I am going to make an extra section on the blog to share my art.

San Sebastián, Spain

San Sebastián, the city known for the most delicious food, a huge range of tapas bars, cobblestone streets, beautiful beaches and amazing weather (usually)!

Accommodation in San Sebastián

Spanish Beers & View from Balcony

We fell back to trusty Airbnb and found a private room in a shared house. The cost of this was half of what a hostel costs when there are 2 people. Not only did we have our own private room but we had a full balcony with an awesome view of Zurriola Beach (shown above) and the old town where the majority of the tapas restaurants were, was a short minute stroll. You can search for San Sebastian rentals here too.

Food in San Sebastian

Tapas

Unfortunately, we weren&#;t given the best weather for our four days in San Sebastian and we had to dig out our winter clothes that were happily packed at the base of our backpack. Due to the bad weather, we weren&#;t able to experience the beaches, although there were quite a few brave surfers/windsurfers/paragliders out there. On the upside, we had much more time for all the restaurants and food consumption.

We contemplated joining an organized Food Tour (top rated on TripAdvisor) which takes you a bunch of restaurants but we decided to skip that and head out on our own Tapas crawl, based on information provided by the locals we were staying with. We also researched the top Pintxo (tapas) restaurants in the Old Town and made our way to the restaurants/bars sampling a few at each. The majority of the tapas are sold on a sliced baguette with a toothpick stabbed in the top.

We&#;ve never seen so many variations before! They lay them out all in a row and you can pick and choose what you like or you can order a fresh hot tapa to order. They don&#;t really advertise this but doing so ensures your food is always hot & fresh.

Top Places to Eat in San Sebastián

If you&#;re tapa bar hopping, simply stand & eat/drink at the bar, no need for a seat especially as there are very few. Below is a tapa bar crawl map, provided by our host.

Tapa Bar Crawl

La Cuchara de San Telmo &#; If you go to one tapas bar, make sure it&#;s this one. Get the crispy pork & grilled octopus. So amazing!

Bar La Vina &#; Get the very gooey cheesecake, what this restaurant is known for.

Borda Berri &#; We were in and out of here in 15 minutes, super tasty dishes & very efficient. Get the beef cheek.

Bar Zabaleta &#; Mainly locals here and run by a family. Jacob enjoyed a hearty serving of Paella (only on Saturdays) whilst Emily a strong Sangria.

La Fabrica &#; Our real splurge, and a very good one at that! For dinner, we enjoyed a bottle of wine, 2 appetizers, 2 mains and 2 desserts. Very, very delicious. Our top choices here was the tomato, zucchini and goat cheese pie with nut salad, sirloin steak served on a bed of mashed potatoes and the wine roasted lamb. We would have redone this meal all over again if it weren&#;t for the price tag! Make sure to make a reservation here, especially if it&#;s on a weekend.

San Sebastian Activities

La Concha Beach &#; San Sebastian&#;s most famous beach. A long stretch of sand, plenty of space for the tourists! There are a lot of surf schools offering surfing in San Sebastian, walk along anywhere on Zurriola beach or La Concha and you will find one.

Peine del Viento &#; On the furthest tip of Ondaretta beach (past La Concha) there are three big standing abstract sculptures (aka the Wind Comb). The waves of the Atlantic crash against the base of these sculptures making for an awesome view. Worth a walk up to view San Sebastián from the other side of town.

Monte Urgull &#; aka Jesus Hill (or so we were told). A steep but relatively easy climb up a mountain to enjoy an incredible view of San Sebastian, shown below. Luckily we chose to go on the first day we arrived as the sun never came out again.

San Sebastian

Hondarribia Day Trip

A small colourful fishing village in the Basque Country that is well worth the visit! An easy minute bus ride from San Sebastian (20 minutes on the express). The culinary scene is growing rapidly here with new pintxo bars opening up all the time. The houses are colourful with flower pots draped over the balconies and the streets are lined with people dining outside. See here for a full guide to Hondarribia.

Our favourite restaurant here was Sardara. This is one of the newest restaurants in the town. We originally went here just for one dish and after sampling a few others elsewhere, we came back to Sardara for seconds and was even more impressed. Emily used the Google Translate app and wrote a glowing message to the chef in Spanish, he came out and was very happy to hear such happy customers! The dishes we got were grilled scallop with pancetta (see pic below), wine Mussels, Cod Au Gratin, & Steak.

Scallop

With very happy tummies, we took a 12 hour overnight sleeper train to Barcelona!

Listen, I&#;m Eddie Lacy&#;s biggest fan, aside from his local Chinese takeout restaurant. He single handedly got me into my Fantasy Football championship last year with a garbage time 20 yard run and touchdown. I&#;ll be forever in his debt.

I&#;m glad Eddie isn&#;t (that) fat anymore. I guess. It was honestly what attracted me to him. Through some trades, he&#;s landed on my team again this year in 3 of my 4 leagues (I told you I LOVE the guy). So here&#;s my plead: Eddie, score a god damn touch down! I appreciate the early season yard games. But, put some points on the board. Please.

Can someone put a pizza in the end zone or something? Papa John&#;s Pizza, THIS IS YOUR SHOT! Peyton may have used steroids. Your boy, J.J. Watt is out for the season. No player would appreciate an endorsement from a pizza joint more than Eddie Lacy.

Actually, scratch that, I&#;m sure the Packers put a &#;no fast food&#; clause into his contract.

 3 games &#; 43 attempts, yards, 0 tds, 5 targets, 2 receptions, 19 yards = fantasy points.

Any way, always remember&#;

„Dej tam víc třísek. Ty noviny víc zmuchlej. My tam občas foukáme, to pomáhá.“ Poprvé zatápím v kamnech a asistuje mi hned několik lidí.

„Až půjdeš do studánky, skloň hlavu. Jak pršelo, vylezli slimáci a budeš je mít přímo nad hlavou,“ upozorňuje mě manžel. Brrr!

Sousedka vyhodnotila můj zkřivený obličej a k mé drobné radosti pokračuje jinou alternativou: „Ale já ho nejčastěji přeříznu vejpůl a on do rána zmizí.

Tom a Jerry

„A když najdu myš v ložnici, tak co mám dělat? Honit ji s koštětem? Majznout ji po hlavě?&#; chrlím dotazy na manžela. &#;Nic. Stejně ji nechytneš,&#; odpovídá s klidem. V mé hlavě zní magické slovo &#; kočka. Sousedovic Mikeška mi ukázala, že si s myší výborně poradí. Jednu bez hlavy už přinesla před dveře chalupy. Tak na ni budu spoléhat dál.

Premiéra motorové pily

„Slib mi, že mi zůstanou obě ruce celé,“ říkám úzkostně manželovi. Ten bere novou motorovou pilu opět do rukou. „Věřím ti! Ale mám z toho respekt,“ dodávám. Manžel mi následně pevným hlasem slibuje, že mi nic neuřízne. A jedeme dál. Když jsme začali řezat, sepnul adrenalin a mě ani nanepadlo bát se o prsty. Pak se pila párkrát sekla a manžel mi posunul ruce dál. Adrenalin vystřídal pud sebezáchovy. Od pily jde teplo. Všude létají piliny. I do očí.

QVC Tili Box

I should probably apologise to your bank balance before I really get started with this post. I&#;m sorry! The QVC Tili Beauty box may be something you  need. Some of you may be aware that I have been looking for a replacement beauty box to my Birchbox subscription, which I get every month. My lovely friend Jess recently told me that QVC were launching their own version of a beauty box. I really do think QVC are one to watch, especially when it comes to beauty. I used to have this very dated view of the company, that it was a shopping channel selling products I didn&#;t want, but my Nana may have loved. Not anymore. They stock some of the most highly rated brands on the market, from &#;Liz Earle&#; to &#;Bobbi Brown&#; but also some of the limited access brands such as &#;tarte&#; and &#;it Cosmetics&#;, (easier to get hold of in the States). The minute I laid eyes on this box I knew I had to have it.

The box is a one off purchase which means no monthly subscription malarky. The Tili (Try it, Love it) comes in at £20 and there are no extra charges for postage and packaging. Included are 9 items and I am genuinely excited to try all of them, which I have never been able to say about a beauty box before.

Inside the QVC Tili box &#;

Nexxus Nutritive Shampoo
Nexxus Nutritive Conditioner
Becca Backlight Priming Filter
Vita Liberata Phenomenal Mousse and Mini Mitt
Bareminerals Skinlongevity Vital Power Infusion
Alpha-H Liquid Gold
Elemis Smart Cleanse Micellar Water
Essie Nail Polish in Ballet Slippers

QVC Tili Beauty Box

Each item is from a well established, premium brand. Usually, these boxes tend to come with &#;fillers&#; &#; cheaper products to balance out the higher priced ones, but the Tili box offers an exception to the rule.

The first edition QVC Tili beauty box is still available here, while stocks last. The next one is out in October and I can&#;t wait to see what will be inside! There are some real gems to be found here, which would usually cost a lot more to try if you were going to purchase them outright.

Let me know if you purchase the QVC Tili, I would love to hear your thoughts!

This is a no holds barred, honest review. I am not getting paid to talk about this hunting pack.  So, with that out of the way, if you are considering buying the ALPS OutdoorZ Pursuit, read along.  I am going to give you my honest opinion, the good, the bad, and what has stood out for me.  (by the way&#;I am an amazon affiliate so I can earn $$ on qualified purchases, but other than that I have nothing on the line here).

I have 5 hunting/camping packs in my collection.  From a small waist pack, a few &#;day&#; packs, to a full monster expedition pack.  In the past few years I have been hunting and fishing in the mountains more and more frequently.  I am not a super backcountry guru….I don’t live in Alaska or Montana.  I don’t hunt on foot into the wilderness for days at a time.  But……I don’t drive my truck to a tree and sit in a stand either.  I would say I am a cross between hunting within easy access and exploring&#;I guess you could call it &#;day long hiking and hunting trips&#;.  So, I needed a pack that was bigger than my waist pack (with shoulder straps) but not too big that it could be considered an overnight bag.  I had a few things that I wanted/needed in my pack:

  • Mid-size, big enough for a full day of hiking.  Think&#; rain gear, change of clothes, first aid, hunting gear, small stove, food, tripod, camera, and maybe a handgun.
  • Sound.  I primarily hunt Whitetail deer and turkey.  So a noisy pack is not an option.
  • Rifle/gun/bow storage.
  • Waterproof…if possible.
  • Durability (I tend to tear up gear over time).
  • Cool stuff.

From Field and Stream to Bass Pro to Amazon and about every comparison article I could find….I read EVERYTHING.  Pros and Cons of each pack, hundreds (yes really) hundreds of product reviews, and dozens of You Tube videos.  I firmly believe that there is nothing more that I can do to be knowledgeable about hunting day packs.  With all that said.  I bought the ALPS OutdoorZ Pursuit pack.  I have used this pack now for 8 months and am heading full speed into a new deer season.  All in all, I love the pack.  There are a few things that I really don’t like, but the good outweighs the bad for me (and my low points may not bother you at all).  So here are my findings, I hope this helps with your purchase, and if you have any advice for us…please leave a comment or photo below (also check out our YouTube video to see my set up and how I gear up).

  • Size:  Coming in at cubic inches I would say that this is a mid-sized pack.  Lots of people asked if this can be used for an overnight trip or for packing out meat.  My answer is……kind of……if you pack light, weather is good, and you make efficient use of space….I would say that you can use it for an overnight trip.  Going 2 or three days in inclement weather with this pack wouldn&#;t be the smartest thing you’ve done…but if you think you can….go for it.  As far as packing meat, yes you can.  It does not have a “meat shelf” like other larger packs.  But it has good size in the main compartment.  I have packed out birds and even a butchered white tail.  You will need some game bags, (I use these inexpensive bags).  The other thing, when you pack out meat, you will need to find a place for anything that was in the bag.  So, I tend to lash everything that was inside to the outside.  The Pursuit is not really made to carry meat, but you sure can.   Side note…cleaning the inside of the pack after hauling meat is semi-easy.   Warm soap and water, hand dry with an old towel, and hang upside down in a dry ventilated space.  As I said earlier, it is not made for packing out meat…but if you de-bone, quarter, and put your meat in game bags, you can make it work.  If hauling out an elk or a big deer for long distances is your thing, I would suggest moving up to a larger pack.  Lastly, I often wear a climbing harness while hunting.  This pack works perfect with my harness and will also work with a more traditional tree safety harness (check out our article and video on why I use a climbing harness here).
  • Sound:  I was a bit surprised here when I got to use the ALPS OutdoorZ Pursuit Pack in the woods.  From what I read; the bag seemed quiet.  When I actually got out and started moving around…it was really quiet.  The pack is made from polyester but it feels a bit like felt.  Against my body and rubbing on trees, the bag was really quiet.  I can hear my water inside the pack (inside the bladder) over the pack noise…so I consider that pretty quiet.  Good marks form me on noise.
  • Rifle and Bow Storage:  This is a feature that was a “must have” for me.  I do a lot of hiking and hunting from what are “car camping spots”.  Drive into the mountains, find a camp spot on a forest service road, and leave early in the morning to hike and hunt all day.  Not having to carry my gun for miles at a time was important.  With my other packs, I have to rig up a janky system with straps that kind of does the job.  So, I wanted a pack that had a designated system for carrying my gun.  The Pursuit has it.  The gun/bow holder is great.  The gun stays secure, it doesn’t mount too high to catch on limbs, not too low that it hits my legs, and it is totally secure.  High marks on this aspect as well.  Also, when not carrying my gun, this part of the pack is perfect for my tripod and some other longer gear (although there is a side section that can carry my tripod when my gun is attached as well…so for the record you can carry both at the same time).  Also…last point, the side attachments are made to carry arrow quivers…so there’s that too.
  • Waterproof:   Is this bag waterproof?  NO.  Is it water resistant, yes.   I would say that the Pursuit is pretty water resistant even without the included rain cover. I did not find another bag that had a rain fly included let alone attached to the bag.  On the bottom of the pack is a small pocket stuffed with a blaze orange rain fly.  Some folks don’t like the color of the rain fly….I get it, when I am turkey hunting the fly is un-usable.  But it is cool to have and has kept my gear dry a few times.  As I said, the Pursuit bag is relatively water resistant even without the cover in place.  I sat in a tree stand with this pack hanging next to me for 3 hours (uncovered) in some pretty good rain.  While the bag was % soaked, my gear inside was dry.  I hung the bag for a day, wide open, and it dried completely, no smell.  I give this bag high marks on its ability to handle weather, it is not a “dry bag” by any means….but it handles pretty damn well.  Rumor has it that you can Scotch-Guard the pack for better water proofing.   I have not done this yet…..
  • Cool Stuff:  Now the fun part.  Let’s talk about the little things that make this bag worthwhile (and one thing that I can’t stand).   The ALPS OutdoorZ Pursuit Pack has tons of pockets, lashings, molly attachments, and all that stuff that let’s you customize your set up.  A few things that really stand out to me are:
    • The Drop Shelf:  This is a zipper compartment on the front of the pack that unzips and folds down like a “shelf”.  This section is about 8” x 14” and has adjustable strap supports on each side so it will not “over open” when you are up in a tree or in a tight situation.  This little compartment is pretty awesome, it is my most used feature by far.  Tons of pockets for ammo, thermacell fuel, wallet…lanyard for your car keys so you don’t have to dig for them, zipper compartments for hunting tags, snacks, etc.   You get it.  I open this shelf when I get in my tree stand and it is like a little area for all my important items.
    • Hydration Bladder Pocket:  This is a must have these days, or it seems so because I did not find a single day pack without this option.  Anyway, I have a 2-liter bladder that fits perfect.  Some reviews suggest a 3 liter would be fine too.  Either way, you have to buy the bladder separate, so I would get what feels appropriate to your style of hunting.  There is also a “hole” or “port” for the drinking tube and an attachment on the shoulder strap to secure the tube.
  • Cons:  Ok, so I don’t have too many cons to write about.  The weight of the bag is a little much, but…..I feel the weight is % acceptable due to its size and features.  I think if a different/lighter material was used it would impact the quietness of the bag.  Take some features away to reduce weight and you have a less functional bag.  So while I am discussing the weight, I think it is ok.  My MAIN PROBLEM with this bag has to do with the waist belt.  I love a waist belt on my bags, it is necessary to have a stable pack….my problem is that this bag has two zipper pockets on both sides of your hips (on the belt).  To me…they are bulky and get in the way of my hands/arms when I am hiking.  I…for the record…DO NOT LIKE THIS….   So I called ALPS…and they answered right away (awesome) and I talked to a very knowledgeable lady and explained my trouble.  While she said they were not removable (sucks)….BUT…the whole waist belt is removable….(ok)…….so my next question was if I could buy another waist belt that did not have the pockets……and…NO….they did not offer it at this time (sucks again).  To be honest, she was very nice, she understood my pain, she said that they may have an alternative waist belt in next years model that I could purchase.  So, I have used the bag now for 8 months and I still don’t like the pockets.  I have not cut them off with scissors yet (although some folks on line have done so).  For all the positive aspects of this bag, this one negative is ok with me.  I guess I will need to design my own bag in order to have all my wishes come true.

So, thanks for reading my review of the ALPS OutdoorZ Pursuit pack.  I do really like this bag; I hope this helps you make a decision on how to spend your hard-earned money.  Please take a look below at some of the attributes that I did not get to discuss and check out our video showing our review and how I set up my pack.  Leave a comment if you can, we would love to hear from you.
